Humans are the only species who create and have awareness of their creation.
But sometimes you may forget that you are the creator of your reality. Spiritual amnesia takes over, and you believe what you perceive through your physical senses. Instead of adjusting your creation, you believe that it is happening to you and you have no control.
Spiritual amnesia is subtle and you become convinced that the world is how you perceive it. Choices are made based on those perceptions, and the forgetfulness becomes powerful. Life begins to unravel and you may even lose hope for a better future.
There’s nothing wrong with you — you’ve forgotten your essence.
A Sioux Legend Points the Way Home
In ancient times, the Creator wanted to hide essence from the humans until they were ready to see it.
He gathered all the other creatures of creation to ask for their advice.
The eagle said, “Give it to me and I will take it to the highest mountain in all the land,”
But the Creator said, “No, one day they will conquer the mountain and find it.”
The salmon said, “Leave it with me and I will hide it at the very bottom of the ocean,”
But the Creator said, “No, for humans are explorers at heart, and one day they will go there, too.”
The buffalo said, “I will take it and bury it in the very heart of the great plains,”
But the Creator said, “No, for one day even the skin of the earth will be ripped open, and they will find it there.”
The creatures of creation were stumped, but then an old blind mole spoke up.
“Why don’t you put it inside them — that’s the very last place they’ll look.”
The Creator said, “It is done.”
Your Essence is a Gift from Divine Love
The word “essence” comes from the Latin word, “ease,” which means “to be.”
Essence is our deepest connection to Universal or Divine Love. When you are grounded in your essence, your words and actions flow, allowing ongoing creation to move from consciousness to manifestation.
You have felt your essence. It’s there when you stand underneath a full moon, surrounded by the stillness of a fall night and the gentle moonlight.
Your essence is there when you look into a baby’s eyes and see her certainty of being.
Babies and young children are the essence of Divine Love, because they haven’t learned how to forget it. Babies don’t filter their experience with thoughts and beliefs, since they are always in the present moment.
Beyond the beauty of external forms, there is more here: something that cannot be named, something ineffable, some deep, inner, holy essence…this inner essence shines through [but] it only reveals itself to you when you are present.
— Eckhart Tolle
The present moment is where you will always find your essence.
Meditation and Mindfulness Bring You Back to the Present Moment
If you find yourself in a funk (and there’s plenty of reasons why — especially since March of 2020, when the world turned upside down), become curious about mindfulness. It will show you the way home.
My own journey is described in this article, “How Meditation Saved My life.”
An excellent place to learn more about mindfulness is at Mindful.org. Their article, “Getting Started with Mindfulness” is a wonderful primer and will lead you further down the path of staying present.
Only you can remember who you are. Only you can return to your essence and live from that place of infinite love. Only you can dissolve spiritual amnesia and be present, awake and aware of your deepest essence.
