Hello Empowered Wayers:
I created my Substack Newsletter about one year ago. The more I use it, the more I enjoy how easy it is to blog, podcast, and connect with other writers.
Since you have been reading my articles for a while, I thought you might want a behind-the-scenes look at how I create them on Substack.
Join Substack
First you have to join Substack. Use my link to create a free account. It’s only a few clicks before Step 2.
Create Your Blog and Podcast
Decide on the theme of your blog and podcast. What topics can you write and speak about on a regular basis? What are you passionate about?
I have written over 150 articles on Medium and when I am out of ideas, I will take one of those and use it as a springboard for a new article. If you have written on other platforms, or even if you have an email list, repurpose that content on Substack.
Decide on your schedule
I once saw a quote on a banner in a gym that read, “Consistency is the discipline that gives you freedom.” It ook me a minute to understand what it was saying, and then I got it.
Commit to an activity and you will discover the freedom to create.
It’s the same with a blog or newsletter. I publish a newsletter and podcast to my Free List on Wednesday mornings, and to my Paid Subscribers on Friday mornings. Each month carries a general theme, which helps me stay on topic and relevant.
Another great feature is the ability to schedule my posts and podcast. I recently had surgery and knew I was going to be unable to write for two weeks. I preloaded two weeks of content before the surgery, and they were sent to my subscribers at the scheduled date and time.
Connect with other writers
The connectivity of Substack is a great way to be seen by other writers. When you recommend a newsletter, that person receives a notice. More than likely, they will check out your space and hopefully reciprocate.
When you start receiving the Substack emails that explain new ways to use the platform, it’s as if you have been granted the keys to the kingdom. The more you engage on the platform with other writers, the more your own work gets noticed.
Share your About Profile on social media.
I have added my Substack Profile to all of my bios on social media. The platform will tell you where new subscribers came from. It also helps to connect your efforts on social media to your longer form content. There is also a form on my website inviting people to join my newsletter.
The Takeaway
If you are a writer or content creator and you are looking for a platform that is easy to use, flexible, and allows for creativity, please join Substack. It’s free to use, you control your content and you own it.
The ability to also create a podcast is one of my favorite features. I have discovered that more people will read my newsletter if a pocast episode is included. The ability to communicate in writing and the spoken word is a beautiful expression of creativity.
Hopefully, you are excited to explore the possibilities! Here’s the Liink to join Substack.
Be sure and let me know what you create. I am your biggest cheerleader :-)
Love & Light,
Kathryn
